Structure of This Book
In this book, we’ve tried to collect in one place the essential knowledge you’ll need to leverage Oracle’s parallel processing features. We’ve also tried to incorporate as much of our actual experience as possible. You will find chapters that clearly explain Oracle’s different parallel processing features, chapters on tuning, and an appendix containing real-life case studies that show you how Oracle’s parallel processing features are really used in different environments.
The book is divided into three parts:
Part I, contains introductory information about parallel processing and why it’s important in an Oracle environment. It consists of the following chapters:
Chapter 1, introduces the concept of parallel processing, explains its potential performance advantages, and describes the Oracle parallel technologies.
Chapter 2, describes the main parallel architectures: Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP), Massively Parallel Processing (MPP), clusters, and Non Uniform Memory Architectures (NUMA).
Part II, focuses on Oracle’s parallel execution features. This part will help you exploit the power of a multiple-CPU system to provide both speedup and scalability. It consists of the following chapters:
