In the early stages of a PacketCable deployment it is more than likely that a majority of the calls made are going to be between PacketCable customers and customers still using the legacy public switched telephone network (PSTN).

Consequently, PSTN interconnection devices and methods are required. The Media Gateway Controller (MGC), Media Gateway (MG), and Signaling Gateway (SG) PacketCable components provide this interconnection.
