It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Counting, Measuring, and Ordering Puzzles
In addition to technical and programming problems, you sometimes encounter brainteasers in your interviews. Brainteasers are mathematical and logical puzzles that have indirect relation to computer programming.
Many interviewers feel these problems are silly because they have no direct bearing on the job at hand and so they won’t ask any of them. Some interviewers, though, think brainteasers are useful in assessing problem-solving ability — perhaps the most important job skill for a programmer.
Sometimes, performance on brainteasers might say a lot about your puzzle-solving experience and little about whether you’re a good coder. Some leading companies, including Google, have asked interviewers to refrain from using brainteasers and to focus exclusively on technical and programming problems.
However, you may encounter brainteasers in your interviews, so this and the next chapter prepare you for them. Because brainteasers share many common themes, the examples in this and the next chapter aim to give you enough experience to solve these kinds of puzzles when they are presented to you during an interview.
