It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
4章NumPyの基礎：配列とベクトル演算
NumPyは「Numerical Python」、つまり「数的Python」くらいの意味で、Pythonでの数値計算における最も重要な基本パッケージの1つです。科学技術計算向けの多くのPythonパッケージが、データ交換のためのいわゆるリンガ・フランカ（共通語）＊1としてNumPyの配列オブジェクトを用いています。この章で説明するNumPyの知識は、その大部分がpandasにおいても利用可能です。
＊1 訳注：日本人としては意味がわかりにくいので括弧書きで共通語と記載しましたが、本来の意味は、ヨーロッパで5世紀〜9世紀頃に発展したフランク王国での「言葉」という意味であり、現代における実際の意味としては、意思疎通に使われる共通語を指します。
NumPyの特徴には次のようなものがあります。
- 高速な行列計算と柔軟なブロードキャストを提供する効率的な多次元配列であるndarray。
- 高速に動作し、呼び出しにループ記法を必要としない標準的な数学関数。
- ディスクへの配列の読み書きに加え、メモリマップファイル機能を提供する入出力機能。
- 線形代数、乱数生成、フーリエ変換の機能。
- NumPyとC、C++、FORTRANで書かれたライブラリを接続するためのC言語のAPI
NumPyにはC言語呼び出しのAPIがあり、理解しやすくドキュメントも充実しています。それによって、NumPyからCで書かれた外部ライブラリへ容易にデータを渡すことができ、また外部ライブラリの計算結果をNumPyに返してndarrayとして扱うこともできます。この機能のおかげで、PythonはC、C++、FORTRANなどで書かれた既存のコード資産へのラッパーとしての位置づけを獲得してきました。NumPyは、これら既存ライブラリにアクセスしやすくする動的インタフェースとしての役割を担っています。 ...
