Business Strategy
The short-term and long-term operations of an organization are guided by vision, mission, and goals. The vision of an organization inspirationally states the desired direction of the future, while an organization’s mission is an action-based statement of an organization’s purpose. The goals are the general outcomes that an organization requires to achieve the vision.
Strategic development and management are broad subjects. They can be viewed as the processes, documentation, and administration involved in setting and achieving the goals and objectives of an organization. Strategic development is also called policy development or strategic planning.
In strategic development, there are several key factors, including relationships among leadership, planning processes, and workforce planning. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) administers the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Two of the Award criteria are “the relationship between the leadership system and the strategic planning process” and “the connection between workforce planning and strategic planning” (NIST 2015). The Award addresses achievements and improvements in leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information analysis, human resource focus, process management, and business performance.
