7 Special Analyses and Processes

Quality planning and plan execution involve many analyses and processes. Four important ones discussed in this chapter are: 1) measurement system analysis (MSA), 2) process capability study, 3) development change management, and 4) quality auditing. To be proactive in quality management, these analyses and processes should be planned for, and conducted during, the development phases of a new product or service.

Understanding of Measurement

Measurement, as an essential part of quality management, quantifies quality status and change over time for a product, process, or service. In most cases, quality is not manageable without measurement. Performing measurements and analyzing their results are a foundation for understanding the quality of a product, process, or service and can lead to a better understanding of current status and improvement opportunities. Therefore, instrumental measurement of inputs, settings, processes, efforts, and outputs, is an integral part and supporting foundation of a business operation, shown in Figure 7.1.
