Originally conceived at Bellcore, Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) is a telco-inspired service that offers a high-speed digital service and analog voice service over a local loop.

The original market driver was distribution of video on demand (VoD). When VoD failed to be a hot market opportunity, the supporters of ADSL (like the supporters of HFC) latched onto high-speed Internet access for their business case. With or without video, people believed that more data would come downstream from the CO than upstream to the CO. The business case for ADSL rests strongly on the proposition that data—and data alone, in this asymmetric form—is sufficient to drive infrastructure development.
