Smart antennas offer a broad range of ways to improve wireless system performance. In general, smart antennas, as shown in Figure 3-1, have the potential to provide enhanced range and reduced infrastructure costs in early deployments, enhanced link performance as the system is built-out, and increased long-term system capacity. In this chapter, general smart antenna concepts are covered which can be applied to a broad range of wireless technologies, including FDMA, TDMA, and CDMA systems.
