Inside the Mary Baker Eddy Library for the Betterment of Humanity in Boston’s Christian Science Center is a walk-in world globe called the Mapparium (Figure 12-1). Made of backlit stained glass, the globe evokes the worldwide news coverage of the Christian Science Monitor, the Church’s newspaper, as of 1935, the year it was built. The Mapparium is also a nearly perfect whispering gallery: a person at one end of the room can hear a whisper on the other as if it was right next to her.
