It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Variation of coefficients
Testing coefficients to determine whether a coefficient should vary by group, and the estimated scale of variation, is a feasible approach to model improvement. Very small varying coefficients (across categories) have the propensity to be dropped out of consideration.
