We compiled this book in honor of our close friend and colleague, Sumantra Ghoshal, who died suddenly in March 2004. In the months after his death, those close to him at London Business School (LBS), and at many other institutions, thought about the things we could do to remember his life and his ideas. We held memorial events at LBS and at academic conferences, we dedicated a special issue of The Smart Manager to Sumantra, and at the time of writing we are in the process of establishing a Chair and a number of scholarships and fellowships in Sumantra’s name.

We also wanted to create – through this book – a permanent record of Sumantra’s academic work, because we feel strongly that his ideas and insights have the potential to make a lasting ...
