Preface

Microsystems and micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) have revolutionized the world of sensors and detectors. A whole range of miniaturized sensors has emerged that can add a wide range of capabilities to portable devices. For example, MEMS-based accelerometers and gyroscopes can add a number of motion-sensing capabilities to portable devices, enabling motion to be used to control the device or shake to be corrected for while capturing a digital image. Optical sensors, such as CCDs and more recently CMOS image sensors, have transformed photography and enabled low-cost image capture for a variety of applications.
