This chapter outlines some of the theoretical models of thermal environmental control; gives a brief reminder of the types of systems involved; and explores their expressive potential in general terms.
The systems of thermal environmental control range from the fully active through every kind of hybrid to the fully passive. In this context, broadly speaking, active systems are those heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems usually designed by engineers; passive systems are to do with the form, construction and external fabric of the building, traditionally the role of the architect. In practice, most buildings are hybrids.
