A laugh is often represented as a kind of croissant: and yet, on all the laughing faces shown here, the mouth is, instead, arced in two directions. The corners of the mouth might go up, but not necessarily.
A Wide-Open Mouth
The zygomaticus major muscles always pull the cheeks backwards, in this way putting the mouth in quotation marks, so to speak.
A laugh can compress the eyes, sometimes even to the point of closing them entirely. The mouth opens to varying degrees, showing the teeth and sometimes the gums.
