The index finger extending from a clenched fist implies vigor and tension. It is accusatory, severe, or commanding. When the other fingers are not so tightly clenched, the gesture is more relaxed. Now it is an explorer discovering a new country or a guide showing the way.
Using one of these positions rather than the index finger is a tool: it can dial a phone number or push a doorbell. Placed against the lips, it calls or silence. It gives rhythm to an orator’s speech: it is raised to ask for the floor or to call for attention.
