Of all the historic photographic processes, I find the daguerreotype the most intriguing. As you tilt the photograph from left to right, the image flips between negative and positive on a mirrored surface, seen in the two views of the image to your left. Holding one of these and manipulating it is a fascinating experience. Unfortunately, the process to create a real one is very involved and uses some toxic chemicals. I have tremendous respect for photographers who still make them—it’s a labor of love.
