What is Hoshin Kanri?

With the first bit of housekeeping out of the way, we now turn to the first step in the Lean Innovation Cycle – Hoshin Kanri. Hoshin Kanri is a Japanese term that literally translates as “Direction” and “Management” [1]. Another way to think of it is that the Hoshin is the strategy a business pursues and the Kanri is the support of that strategy. At its heart, Hoshin Kanri is a structured and systematic way of providing direction to the rest of the organization. It is a management mechanism that ensures that everybody in the organization, regardless of their place in the enterprise hierarchy, is aligned to the same strategic goals.
