4HALF-STUD OFFSETS

When you’re building with LEGO, you can only place each piece such that its studs (bumps) line up with the studs on the layer immediately below it. If you start with a 32×32 baseplate, for example, that means you’re restricted to a 32×32 grid of possible locations (separated by increments of 1 stud) where you can place the pieces in your next layer. This can be quite limiting. Say, for example, you’re building a wall and you want a section to be recessed. The smallest amount you can normally set back the recessed section is 1 stud, since the pieces have to align with the grid determined by the layer below.
