This Is Service Design Methods

Introduction

This is the printed version of the method companion to the book This is Service Design Doing (#TiSDD) written by Marc Stickdorn, Adam Lawrence, Markus Hormess, and Jakob Schneider – as well as more than 300 co-authors and contributors from the international service design community.

In a book that contains the input and experience of so many talented professionals, we were spoiled for great material. We ended up including more content, case studies, textboxes, expert tips, and comments than we initially thought we would … and the book grew. Although we were able to negotiate our contract with O’Reilly and lengthen the planned book to 550 pages, it was still clear we would need to pick and choose what could be in the book itself and what we’d need to present via other channels.

A final round of editing shortened and tightened the book (making it much better, we think), and we wrote the short “method teasers” you will find in #TiSDD. Then we took the original, full-length, step-by-step hands-on method descriptions and offered them entirely free on the book’s website, www.tisdd.com.

Readers told us they loved the expanded online methods, but many said they were not reading them in digital form. Instead, they were printing the methods out to have them handy during workshops. This, of course, made total sense – but printing out 180 pages and binding them yourself is a lot of work, and in many cases resulted in a messy homemade ringbinder which was not easy to use. The ...
