Part I looked at the two drivers that slowly change cultural norms and embed toxicity in organizations. Likened to the ‘boiling frog’ analogy, these dimensions burn slowly over time. Unlike the boiling frog analogy that argues when the water begins to get too hot, the frog will simply jump out of the saucepan; the reality for individuals working in such environments finds that there is a lid to that pot which makes it impossible to jump out. That lid represents the harsh realities of the cost of living and the often-limited ability to change organizations.
This part will look at toxic cultures from a different perspective: The Toxic Triangle (see Figure 5.1).
