Traditionally, a peripheral is any hardware attached to the PC. The device is peripheral to the heart of the system. This location doesn’t imply that the device is optional; a keyboard is a peripheral, but its presence is necessary to operate the computer. Likewise, a monitor is technically a peripheral, but on an all-in-one PC, it’s integrated into the console.
