As I mentioned in Chapter 1, the version of the Ubuntu Desktop CD that comes with this book is designed to work with i386 processors, either in PCs or Intel-based Macs. It will also work with AMD64 processors, albeit not in 64-bit mode. In order to use Ubuntu with AMD64 processors in 64-bit mode, you must get a different disk on your own. There are several ways of doing this: downloading an ISO (disk image) and then burning it to CD yourself, ordering the CD from Ubuntu (for free), or ordering it from an online Linux CD provider (for a nominal cost).
