Augmented reality (AR) has lately enjoyed a renaissance of sorts. Because of the rich history of virtual reality (VR), AR had seemingly taken a backseat to VR in terms of general public recognition. Whether the concepts were more nebulous to grasp or VR was seen as the “sexier” technology, AR has always seemingly played second fiddle to VR in consumer mindshare.
In no period was this more pronounced than that of 2013 to mid-2017. VR headsets re-entered the public consciousness with a bang, and AR took a back seat yet again.
However, a funny thing happened in the fall of 2017. Apple and Google announced ARKit and ARCore, respectively, making it much easier for developers to write AR applications for the iOS and Android platforms. This announcement was huge, because it immediately vaulted the number of AR-compatible devices to nearly half a billion devices (the installed base of compatible iOS and Android devices). ...
