It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Many database applications work with large amounts of data. If a program only needs a few data values, it can easily include them as compiled-in data, or load them from text files or the System Registry. When a program needs a lot of information, a database can be a big advantage.
Many database applications work with thousands or even millions of records. In such large databases, helping the user find particular records can be difficult. You can use different techniques depending on your specific application.
