Labeling and measurements enhance medical visualizations with useful information for documentation, follow-up examinations and educational purposes. Labeling and measuring may be performed interactively, e.g., by dragging an annotation line or selecting points for distance measurements. An alternative is the automatic placement of labels, where labels and annotation lines are placed such that they do not overlap with each other. Automatic labeling is essential if several anatomical structures, e.g., five liver metastases should be labeled. We explain labeling techniques for 2D slice-based visualizations as well as for 3D renderings.
