Protocols

Table A-8 shows the distribution of the most popular transfer protocols, HTTP and FTP. Not surprisingly, you can see that on average FTP is used to transfer larger files. Note that this certainly does not represent the distribution of HTTP and FTP traffic on the Internet as a whole. This data comes only from proxy cache logs. Many people configure proxying for HTTP only and connect to FTP servers directly. Furthermore, most FTP clients cannot use HTTP proxies.

Table A-8. Transfer Protocol Usage (IRCache Data)

Protocol% Requests% Bytes
HTTP99.995.9
FTP0.14.1

This data is derived from a simple analysis of Squid’s access.log file. The protocol is taken from the URL and the size from the fifth field.
