Men who join discussions of leadership and authority in the context of women, however careful and nonpolemical, may encounter outrage. The profound injustices that fuel this outrage go back many lifetimes. Women who today seek equal opportunity and traditionally male roles of prominence and authority often carry both their own experience of injustice and the injustices of the past on their shoulders. They have become repositories for the pent-up frustrations of our ancestors as they champion change in essential elements of our social order.
