20.1 Introduction
Open RAN and virtualized RAN (vRAN) can lead to the transformation of how operators and large enterprise customers procure, deploy, manage, and optimize cellular equipment. The primary focus of Open RAN and vRAN are: (1) decoupling radio unit (RU) and baseband distributed unit (DU) and centralized unit (CU), and (2) decoupling hardware (HW) from software (SW). Two additional targets are: (3) to enable RAN automation using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), and (4) using centralized location for baseband processing. The architecture targets and challenges are shown in Figure 20.1.
