This chapter describes some of the scientific principles that are fundamental to all types of broadcasting. It covers the physical properties of light and sound, and how the basic workings of human hearing and vision allow us to perceive sound from audio signals and moving color images from video signals. We will build on these principles later in the book when we discuss how studio and transmission equipment and systems work.
