In New Zealand, we have a cultural phenomenon called the “tall poppy syndrome.” Tall poppy syndrome is a social mindset in which people that are perceived to be better than average and ambitious, with a string of achievements to their name, are cut down. “Cutting down the tall poppy” results in an environment where high achievers can feel a sense of a growing negative energy toward them from those who are jealous and/or angry to see those extraordinary individuals pushing against the grain. I hate tall poppy syndrome.
