CHAPTER 14Human Supervision Over AI
One key area where AI falls short is in making unsupervised decisions. We know that AI algorithms can process vast amounts of data and provide insights, but they lack the intuitive understanding and emotional intelligence that humans possess. That is where humans must come into, and stay in, the equation. AI is designed to assist with decision-making by leveraging its computational power and advanced algorithms. But AI is not a good substitute when it comes to identifying or responding to intangible human decision-making factors. In scenarios where ethical choices need to be made or where moral compasses guide decision-making processes, AI may struggle to provide meaningful insights or recommendations.1 From complex calculations to pattern recognition, AI has proven its accuracy, quality, and speed. But can AI truly replicate the subjective experiences and feelings that enhance our world? While AI excels in providing logical solutions, it lacks the inherent human touch that comes with emotions. These qualities are what drive our connections with others and enable us to navigate the complexities of life. They allow us to understand nuance, adapt to different situations, and make decisions based on more than just cold calculations. Empathy is not merely understanding someone's perspective; it involves connecting on an emotional level and responding with genuine care.
