CHAPTER 17The Competency Tree
Future-proofing. A new term we hear repeatedly as we grapple with how to not become obsolete. Future-proofed skill sets; future-proofed competencies; future-proofed thinking…and the list goes on. But what does this really mean? Human competitiveness in the future is going to rely on an entirely new skills and competencies framework. We tend to fall short when we think of these skills and competencies as one-offs or as mutually exclusive. We throw out words and desired skills without understanding how they all fit together more cohesively.
To successfully address the complex challenges that lie ahead, a more holistic and organic approach toward skills and competencies is needed. By recognizing the interconnectedness of various disciplines and training for them accordingly, organizations can effectively “future-proof” their workforce. Far fewer employees today can rely solely on their specialized knowledge or technical expertise. The rapidly evolving landscape demands individuals who possess a diverse range of skills that can be applied across different domains. This includes critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, creativity, collaboration, and digital literacy. Rather than compartmentalizing employees into narrow roles or functions, organizations should encourage cross-functional collaboration and provide opportunities for interdisciplinary training.
