So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

何年も昔に、筆者はカリフォルニア大学サンディエゴ校に事務アシスタントとして就職しました。それが筆者にとって、Web開発のキャリアの始まりでした。業務には学部のWebサイトの管理も含まれていました。筆者がWebマスターを務めていた頃は、<table>タグを使ったレイアウトやCGIが主流でした。ブラウザ業界ではNetscape Navigatorがまだ幅を利かせていました。筆者の技術のレベルはひどいものでした。スペルミスのあるメールを送ったら、赤い下線が受信者側でも表示されると思い込んでいたこともありました。しかし筆者は忍耐強い上司に恵まれ、下線はメールの作成時にしか表示されないということを教えてもらえました。Webの世界へと筆者を導いてくれたのもこの上司です。
その後15年を経て、筆者は業界のエキスパートと思ってもらえるようになり、講演を行ったりオープンソースのプロジェクトを管理したり本を書いたりしています。今日の立場を得られたのはなぜだろうと、自問することがあります。その答えは、ただ毎日を過ごしてきたからではないと思います。少なくとも、そうではなかった日々があるはずです。
