Chapter 2. Displays

AR displays differ from normal displays in that they must combine virtual and real stimuli. In this chapter, we investigate the various options for such displays. We start our discussion of AR displays with considering the nonvisual modalities. There has been significant work in the area of augmentations via audio, whereas our other nonvisual senses—touch, smell, and taste—have received comparatively less attention with regard to AR. Overall, the lion’s share of AR interest and development to date has focused on the visual domain. While the authors have a keen interest in multimodal AR developments, this chapter reflects that reality by discussing visual displays in detail.
