Chapter 4. Computer Vision for Augmented Reality

This chapter introduces computer vision algorithms for use in AR. It focuses in particular on optical tracking and scene reconstruction, but, as we will see in later chapters, several concepts presented here will also prove important for other AR topics, such as visual coherence, interaction, authoring, navigation, and collaboration. Computer vision for AR is concerned with electronically perceiving and understanding imagery from camera sensors that can inform the AR system about the user and the surrounding environment. AR necessitates real-time approaches—a requirement reflected in the subset of computer vision work reviewed here.
