Chapter 11. Navigation
AR navigation can enhance exploration of the real world, facilitate wayfinding, and support viewpoint control during the execution of real-world tasks. With its emphasis on a first-person viewpoint, AR can embed navigation support directly into a user’s activities. However, designing augmentations so that they are truly supportive requires careful consideration. In this chapter, we discuss how AR can support exploration and discovery, visualize routes, and guide viewpoint adjustments. We also consider interfaces that combine multiple perspectives to provide overview and detail or transport a user to physically unreachable viewpoints.
