Let’s do a thought experiment. Bring to mind someone in your life you deeply trust. Someone you can confide in, count on, feel committed to. Now ask yourself: how did they earn that trust? Of the thousands of people in your network of human connections, why is this relationship so highly prized by you? When I ask that question of myself, I see recurring patterns of qualities in the people I trust the most. They have high levels of empathy – they try to see things from other people’s perspective. They listen carefully and withhold judgement. They are not pursuing an agenda, they have my interests at heart – but they’re not afraid to ask challenging questions to encourage positive change.
