It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

2009年までJavaScriptの用途はブラウザ用のスクリプト言語にほぼ限られていました†1。2009年にサーバーサイドのJavaScriptの現況に不満をもっていたJoyent社の開発者Ryan DahlがNode.js（略してNode）を開発しました。Nodeの採用はかなりの速度で進んでおり、新しい技術の導入に慎重なことの多いエンタープライズマーケットでも成功を収めています。
[†1] Node.jsよりも前にサーバー側でJavaScriptを使おうという試みはいくつかなされていました。その中でもNetscape Enterprise Serverは1995年には動作していました。しかし本当に注目を集めるようになったのは2009年にNode.jsが公開されてからのことです。
JavaScriptの言語仕様が気に入った開発者はNodeのおかげで、従来ほかの言語で行われてきた開発にもJavaScriptを使えるようになりました。ウェブ開発書にとってはさらに魅力的です。なぜならば、クライアント側とサーバー側で同じ言語を利用することができるため言語の切替えが不要になるからです。そして同じコードをクライアントでもサーバーでも実行することができます。
当初Nodeはウェブアプリケーションの開発用に用いられましたが、その後デスクトップアプリやシステム用のスクリプトの作成にも用いられるようになってきています。NodeがJavaScriptの活躍の場を広げているわけです。
20.1 Nodeの基本
JavaScriptが使えるならばNodeのアプリケーションを書くことができます。ただしこれはブラウザ用のJavaScriptプログラムがそのままNodeで実行できるという意味ではありません。ブラウザ用のAPIがなければこれは不可能です。NodeにはDOMのサポートはありません（HTMLページを処理するわけではありませんので、これは当然といえば当然です）。逆に、ブラウザ用にはないNode専用のAPIもあります。たとえばOSやファイルシステム関連のAPIはブラウザには用意されていません（ブラウザからローカルのファイルを削除できてしまったりしたら大変です！）。また、「18章 ...
