When you are present, you are in the moment, giving the people around you your full attention. Only when you are fully present can you lead with wise compassion. In fact, in our research, we found that leaders who reported practicing mindfulness, which helps us to be present in everyday life, were rated as significantly wiser and more compassionate by their direct reports compared to leaders who practiced mindfulness less frequently or did not practice it at all. Figure 6-1 shows the relationship between mindfulness practice and wisdom and compassion.
