CHAPTER 17AI Hype Versus Reality? What Does This Mean for Humans?
Andrea: With two teens in high school field sports, I sit along the sidelines of fields pretty often. This past fall, I overheard many conversations among the seniors applying to colleges. All of these students have tinkered with ChatGPT and have seen its magic first hand.
“College apps are terrible, maybe I’ll ChatGPT my essays,” one joked.
Most of these academically focused and highly aspirational kids are not truly certain of what they want to major in in college, but it seems being unsure or exploratory about the possibilities doesn’t fare well in today’s competitive college application process. One afternoon, I happened to overhear a conversation regarding their college application strategies.
“We have to show a demonstrated focus area for colleges but we have to find something that won’t be overtaken by AI,” one kid mused.
Another added, “you don’t want to be a lawyer like my uncle because AI robots will replace them.”
“I’m interested in environmental and civil engineering but maybe I’ll apply to agriculture which could also be easier to get into. Can AI grow crops?”
“I would like to do custom woodwork,” chimed in another.
