4.2. Historical Perspective of Relational Model

While introducing a relational model to the database community in 1970, Dr. E.F. Codd stressed on the independence of the relational representation from physical computer implementation such as ordering on physical devices, indexing and using physical access path. Dr. Codd also proposed criteria for accurately structuring relational databases and an implementation-independent language to operate on these databases. On the basis of his proposal, the most significant research towards three developments resulted into overwhelming interest in the relational model.
