Part II. The Five Principles of Delightful Intelligence
Building delightful AI isn’t magic. It’s the result of five principles working together, each one answering a question users are silently asking every time they interact with your product.
- Chapter 5 — Trust by Design: “Can I believe this?”
- Chapter 6 — Design for Emotions: “How does this make me feel?”
- Chapter 7 — Graceful Failure: “What happens when it breaks?”
- Chapter 8 — User Agency: “Am I in control?”
- Chapter 9 — Hyper-Personalization: “Does this fit me?”
Answer all five well, and you create AI products users genuinely love. Miss even one, and the whole experience unravels. Personalize brilliantly but betray privacy and trust, and users feel surveilled. Design for emotion but remove agency, and users feel manipulated. Recover from failure gracefully but never earn trust in the first place, and none of it matters.
These principles aren’t a checklist. They build on each other. They inform each other. And as you’ll see, they occasionally tension against each other in ways that require real judgment calls.
The first principle is the most fundamental. Without it, none of the others land.
