History of Mono
The Mono Project was initiated by Miguel de Icaza, founder of the open source GNOME Project in 2001. Miguel was employed by Ximian Incorporated, producer of a business-oriented GNOME desktop (Ximian Desktop) and publishers of Evolution, a popular open source email client/PIM. Miguel was arguably the first in the open source community to recognize the potential of the .NET platform to drive development productivity.
