Chapter 8. Conclusion

IPv6 has been deployed in several service provider (SP) core networks around the globe for a variety of reasons, such as long-term expansion plans and service-offering strategies, preparing for new service types, gaining competitive advantage, and so on. Recently, IPv6 is being actively deployed in service provider broadband access networks. In this book we highlight primary challenges that service providers face when deploying IPv6 in their broadband access networks. Therefore, after providing a brief overview of IPv6 business case and deployment models in broadband access networks, protocol basics, and provisioning in Chapters 1 and 2, we concentrated on IPv6 deployment techniques for broadband SP networks, such as cable, DSL, ETTH, and wireless. In Chapters 3 and 4 we compared IPv4 and IPv6 service deployment models and highlighted similarities and differences between the two. Subsequent chapters were focused on actual configuration of various network elements in delivering IPv6 broadband solutions. Guidelines for debugging and troubleshooting were also covered to help readers build more confidence in handling day-to-day operations involving provisioning, deployment and troubleshooting problems. In general, in this book we highlight various issues concerning IPv6 deployment in SP broadband access networks and suggest solutions and workarounds for them. Additional solutions are actually work in progress currently under discussion in the IETF and other standards ...
