Where Do We Design for Emotion?

In Chapter 3, we talked about the importance of balancing users’ emotional states to command attention and create the circumstances necessary for flow; the experience of being totally immersed in an activity. Flow can occur when people have clear goals and face challenges they know they can handle with their existing skills. When we face these challenges in an environment with reduced distraction and immediate feedback, highly immersive experiences can result (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990).
