Introduction

A few years ago, I was just like you. Like almost every other guy in the developed world—and by developed, I mean countries where high-speed Internet access and copies of Halo 2 are readily available to anyone with a credit card and a video game addiction—I used computers for video games, work, and email, but I didn't spend much time sweating over what made them tick. I mean, I work in the Coast Guard; I'm not a computer geek. I just wanted the thing to work, right?
