The most common regret of the dying is not having maintained meaningful relationships amidst the busyness of daily life. One can say the same about dying startups, many of which (including my first startup) could have received a new lease on life through strong strategic relationships. Unfortunately, it is all too human to ignore our own mortality and all too entrepreneurial to be overly optimistic about our chances of success. The antidote, of course, is not to be morbid or pessimistic. It is to be realistic; to adopt a long-term perspective and have an objective view of what the future has in store for us.
