We hoped to start a conversation about a much neglected and, in our opinion, critical component of business strategy. The reason for the existence of business is to take risks. The question that we posed is not how much money you are going to make from an economic opportunity, but what risks are keeping everyone else away. If you can develop capabilities for taking on these risks and avoid incurring major losses, more often than not, you will be making profits in the long run. Our basic message is that understanding and managing risks should be an integral part of your business processes and not relegated to a backroom staff function.
