
Driving vs. Driven Dimensions
The dimension line drawn in Figure
T
is a driving dimension — that is, it
drives the size of the model.
Adding a lot of dimension lines to a sketch will overly constrain it, making
some of those dimension lines driven, or reference lines. A driven dimension
tells you how long the line is, but it can’t be edited. You have to edit the line
itself to change it. Note that if the sketch is unconstrained, changing the
dimensions will change the shape (Figure
U
). A shape changes when a
driving dimension tells it to change.
