The Deccan peninsula, also called as ‘Gondwana’ land, was formed due to the merging of the southern landmass drifted away from African continent. Deccan peninsula is made of lava trap and contains mostly igneous rocks formed from the cooling and solidification of lava. It contains lava soil. This landmass has elevation higher in the westward side compared to the eastward side. The land slopes from the west to east. Thus, major rivers that originate in the Western Ghats flow towards the Bay of Bengal.
